WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF SPIRITS?

There are several different types of demonic spirits. Many of them have names that reflect how they make a person feel. A spirit of depression will make a person feel depressed, just as a spirit of anger will make a person feel angry, and so on. Spirits also have ranks, meaning that some have control over others. Spirits can also work together in groups, often called “families” or “nests.”

I believe Christians should not become caught up in the intricate details of the demonic realm. While it is certainly necessary for all Christians to have a general knowledge, it is imperative that we do not focus on demonic spirits to the point of fascination or even obsession. Remember that Philippians 4 tells us to keep our eyes focused on what is good and praiseworthy. When learning about spirits or engaging in deliverance, our primary focus should always be on God. It should never be on trying to learn every detail about every spirit to the point where we are glorifying satan more than God!

Unfortunately, I have seen people take this to the extreme and enter an unhealthy place of fascination with the demonic realm, thereby losing sight of the power of God and His goodness. When I train others in deliverance ministry, I always stress the importance of worshipping and glorifying God above fixating on any satanic force. Whatever you focus on becomes all that you see. We need to stay focused on God, His love, and His supreme power.

However, I believe a basic knowledge of the demonic realm is important in order to be successful in deliverance ministry. When praying for themselves or for others, Christians should be able to recognize whether or not they are dealing with a spiritual issue. If they are dealing with a spiritual issue, Christians should be able to discern the nature of that issue, so they can pray accordingly.

Whatever you focus on becomes all that you see. We need to stay focused on God, His love, and His supreme power. However, I believe a basic knowledge of the demonic realm is important in order to be successful in deliverance ministry.

One of the gifts God makes available to us—and one of the gifts I use when ministering—is the discerning of spirits, as mentioned in First Corinthians 12:10. Essentially, by using this gift with the power of the Holy Spirit, we can know if we have encountered a spiritual issue. Often this gift can manifest through feelings and emotions. For example, while you are ministering to a person, God may allow you to feel a pain in your body where there was no pain prior. He may do this to tell you where the spirit affecting the person is located, so you can command it to leave from that location.

God can also show you things through dreams and visions, giving you indicators about a demonic spirit that you may be encountering. He can also speak right to your spirit in His still, small voice or by using the Bible.
